English Grammar for Beginners

Paragraph writing is one of the most essential skills in English. A paragraph is a group of related sentences that discuss one main idea. Whether you’re writing essays, emails, or stories, knowing how to write a clear and well-structured paragraph is key to good communication.

A well-written paragraph generally follows this 3-part structure:

    1. Topic Sentence (Main Idea)

The topic sentence is usually the first sentence of the paragraph. It introduces the main idea of the paragraph — what the entire paragraph is about.

Features of a good topic sentence:

    • Clear and to the point

    • Focuses on one idea only

    • Often contains a controlling idea that tells the reader what to expect

     Example:

“Reading books helps improve vocabulary and communication skills.”
(This sentence tells the reader that the paragraph will talk about the benefits of reading.)

     Tips:

    • Do not include too many ideas in one topic sentence.

    • Avoid starting with vague phrases like “There are many things…”

    2. Supporting Sentences (Details & Explanation)

Once the topic is introduced, the next 3–5 sentences should support the topic sentence. These are called supporting sentences.

    They provide:

    • Examples

    • Facts or reasons

    • Explanations

    • Personal experiences (sometimes)

These sentences help to develop the idea and make it stronger.

     Example:

“When we read books regularly, we come across new words in context. This helps us remember their meanings and usage better. Moreover, reading improves grammar and sentence structure through exposure.”

     Tips:

    • Make sure all supporting details are relevant to the topic sentence.

    • Use linking words like also, moreover, for example, in addition for flow.

    • Don’t repeat the same idea; instead, add new and helpful information in each sentence.

    3. Conclusion Sentence (Wrap-up)

The final part of the paragraph is the conclusion sentence, also called the closing sentence. It restates the main idea in a new way or gives a final thought to leave an impact on the reader.

Features of a good concluding sentence:

    • It brings the paragraph to a natural end

    • It does not introduce new ideas

    • It reinforces the topic sentence

     Example:

“Therefore, reading is an effective way to grow one’s language skills and overall knowledge.”

     Tips:

    • Use conclusion words like In conclusion, To sum up, Overall, Thus.

    • Keep the tone of the closing sentence consistent with the rest of the paragraph.

    Bonus: Paragraph Writing Tips

    • Stick to one idea per paragraph. Don’t jump from one topic to another.

    • Maintain logical flow — the reader should be able to follow your thoughts easily.

    • Use proper punctuation and grammar in every sentence.

    • After writing, reread your paragraph to check clarity and consistency.

    • Practice writing different types of paragraphs: descriptive, narrative, persuasive, and informative.

Exercise is important for a healthy life. It helps improve physical fitness and boosts mental health. Regular physical activity reduces stress, increases energy levels, and keeps the body in shape. Studies show that people who exercise regularly have lower risks of chronic diseases. Therefore, exercising daily can lead to a happier and healthier lifestyle.
